Global Schools Award

The Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association’s Global Schools Award [GSA] provides a framework for establishing and developing the global dimension. It is designed to recognise good practice in the delivery of the global dimension in schools. Based on YHGSA’s benchmarks for the global dimension achievements are defined at three different levels – schools can choose from ‘Developing’, ‘Established’ and ‘Enhanced’. To receive the award, schools need to demonstrate achievement across the following areas:

  • Leadership
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Resources
  • Staff Development
  • Parental/Community Involvement

The scheme is open to all schools in the Yorkshire and Humber region and schools that gain the award are accredited for three years. There is no registration fee and schools may be eligible for a package of support from the YHGSA. In the Craven area Upper Wharfedale School in Threshfield has gained GSA Level 2.

To get involved download the Global Schools Award Guidelines and Registration Form from www.yhgsa.org.uk

FairtradeMakeItHappenFairtrade School Status

A Fairtrade school is a school that is committed to Fairtrade. This means it helps young people understand how trade works and how to make global trade fairer. It sells and uses Fairtrade products as far as possible, and takes action for Fairtrade in school and in the local community.

Gaining Fairtrade status is fun for everyone along the way.

Go to www.fairtrade.org.uk/schools for information and ideas to help you.

Craven DEC supports schools gain Fairtrade status by facilitating a Fairtrade Schools Exchange, loaning resources for developing Fairtrade activities and a number of areas closely related to Fairtrade including sustainability, human rights and child labour. We also encourage buddy arrangements.

In the local area Kildwick C. of E. School has gained Fairtrade School status and several schools are almost there, notably Upper Wharfedale Secondary School in Threshfield and Askwith Primary School.
